Can You Make Rice Pudding with Leftover Cooked Rice?

Curious if you can use leftover rice pudding in the instant pot? While it works if you bake the rice pudding, I wouldn't recommend the Instant Pot.

You will find it can really sog up your rice quite a bit to re-cook in the pressure cooker. Also, Instant Rice doesn't work good in the pressure cooker as well. It breaks down too much and leaves a soggy mess.

Can You Freeze Rice Pudding?

Instant Pot rice pudding can be frozen. Once you have it cooled down, simply place it in a proper freezer container. Freeze the rice pudding for up to three months.

To thaw, you need to place in the refrigerator overnight. Don't thaw on the counter as the milk and other ingredients will spoil if left on the counter for an extended period of time.

How to Make Rice Pudding in an Instant Pot

Here is how you make this classic Rice pudding in the Instant Pot. All your favorite classic flavors but with a new device to speed up the cooking process a bit.

Start by adding all your ingredients into the pressure cooker. Make sure to stir the ingredients together to disperse ingredients.

Put the lid on your pot, and make sure the valve is set to sealing. Select the porridge setting and cook for 20 minutes followed by 15-minute natural release.

Manually push off any remaining pressure and open the pressure cooker.

Top with more cinnamon as an option. Serve and enjoy!

How to Thicken Pudding

If you find your rice pudding isn't as thick as you would like, simply turn on the sauté feature.

As the rice mixture cooks it will help to thicken the sauce. Make sure to stir often or it will burn. Once it reaches the desired thickness serve and enjoy.

Supplies Used to Make Instant Pot Rice Pudding

  • Instant Pot Duo Nova (or other Instant Pot with porridge setting) |
There are other Instant Pot models that have the porridge function as well, but every size of the Instant Pot Duo Nova has a porridge setting, so it's a great place to start.
  • Silicone tipped spatula | This set of silicone tips utensils has a handy spatula, and some other utensils that work great for use in the Instant Pot and especially well in a non-stick pan. You don't want to scrape the bottom of a pan with a metal utensil.
  • Instant Pot hot pads | These hot pads are perfect for lifting the inner pot in and out of the Instant Pot and also for lifting a trivet with handles out of the pot.

Rice Pudding Origin

Old fashioned rice pudding recipe can be found in China so long ago. There is an argument that rice pudding originated in India as well. It is hard to know where it truly came from. But either way, this Instant Pot rice pudding is one of our family favorites.
