Instant Pot Split Pea Soup is a classic split pea soup recipe that is loaded with split peas, diced ham, carrots, onions, and spices. The ultimate split pea and ham.

Instant pot soups are one of my favorites, it really infuses flavor into the soup for a slow-simmered flavor that makes in a fraction of the time.

Cooking split peas in the Instant Pot are a tried and true way for perfect split peas every single time. Dried peas cook so much faster and end up tender every single time.

How To Make Split Pea Soup

First thing you want to do is add your oil into the Instant Pot and turn the saute mode on. Add in your onion and saute till transclucent.

Secondly, you will add in the rest of the ingredients and place the lid on the Instant Pot, and make sure the valve is set to sealing.

Cook on high pressure for 20 minutes followed by 10 minutes of natural releasing. Then you man manually press off the rest of the pressure.

Lastly, open up the Instant Pot and season with salt and pepper.

Storing Split Pea Soup with Ham

If you happen to have leftover soup, simply store it in an airtight container for up to 3-4 days in the refrigerator.

Go ahead and freeze any soup that you don't plan to eat right away. Just place in a freezer-friendly container. This split pea and ham soup can then be reheated from frozen in the microwave.

Or thaw in the refrigerator overnight, and then heat in a skillet on the stove, or warm up in a slow cooker. The texture will be slightly different.

Variations To This Instant Pot Soup

  • Leave the ham out
  • Replace ham with bacon
  • Do a mix of ham and bacon for added flavor
  • Use green split peas or even yellow split peas for this recipe
  • Adjust the spices to transform the flavor of the soup
  • Add in some red pepper flakes for added spice or even hot sauce

Split Pea soup is a delicious and nutritious hearty dinner recipe that you'll absolutely love. It's full of tasty ingredients that combine to make the perfect flavor. This is a great recipe to use up leftover Instant Pot ham.

Cook Time 35 minutes
Total Time 40 minutes

Instructions

    1. Turn your instant pot on to sauté mode. Once it is hot, add your vegetable oil and onion. Sauté your onions until they are translucent. This should take about 3 to 5 minutes.
    2. Add carrots, ham, broth, water, split peas, and bay leaf to the Instant Pot.
    3. Set your instant pot to high pressure for 20 minutes. Once the 20 minutes is complete, allow it to natural release for about 10 minutes. Once the 10 minutes are complete, do a manual release by bringing the valve toward you to release all pressure.
    4. Salt and pepper to your liking. Transfer to your soup bowl and enjoy!

Notes

Substitute chicken broth for chicken bone broth for a healthier soup.

How to Cook Green Split Peas

Make split pea soup in Instant Pot easily with either yellow or green split peas. For this recipe, you'll simply swap out the yellow split peas 1:1 for green split peas to make it a green split peas recipe.
