One of the most common mistakes new Instant Pot owners make is overfilling their inner pot. This can be caused in many ways but learning how many oz in a cup of soup or cake mix should go into the mix we would be one of the first steps to preventing this problem. Read on to learn more.

There are 8 fluid oz in a cup, and when it comes to soup that's not much. However, as we discussed in How Many Ounces In A Cup, fluid ounces are different than dry ingredients, and using the correct measuring equipment- especially for broths and soups- is important.

Take for example our Instant Pot Ham and Potato Soup recipe. The ingredients require 1 cup of milk plus 8 cups of chicken broth.

If you try to use a metal or stainless-steel measuring cup, you might up with less than the required liquid ingredients.

This is because metal or stainless-steel measuring cups are used for dry ingredients, where weight is more important.

For example, 2 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour in our Instant Pot Pound Cake will measure differently in a stainless-steel measuring cup than 24 ounces of melted candy melts in our Instant Pot Cookies and Cream Hot Chocolate Bombs measured in a glass measuring cup.

And should you accidentally confuse the two- or worse, believe it won't make a big difference, you'll end up with an extremely dry, crumbly pound cake or not enough chocolate to fill your silicone molds- which is a problem if you're making these at the last minute.

We also have a quick sheet if you want to learn more about basic kitchen conversion measurements.

How to measure oz in a cup

One way to measure oz in a cup of dry ingredients is to utilize a stainless-steel measuring cup and scale.

The scale is used to keep an accurate account of the dry ounces, but be mindful, scales take into consideration the weight of the measuring cup separately so you can remove it from the final equation.

You can also measure without the scale by diving the stainless-steel measuring cup into the dry ingredients and smoothly removing the excess from the top.

Be sure to tap the sides for the dry ingredients to pack into the air pockets for a closer measuring count.

  3. Instant Pot Apple Spice Cake
  4. Instant Pot Pork Carnitas

For liquid ingredients, you can use a glass measuring container that is 8 fluid ounces.

You can even use shot glasses to measure! Most standard-size shot glasses are 1 ounce, so you will need to fill it up 8 times to get to a cup, but when you don't have many options, you use what you can.
